About
Philip Schein, MD is a medical oncologist and pharmacologist who has had a long standing interest in photography, begining in earnest when his young family was growing up while we worked at the National Cancer Institute. His compositional interests include abstraction, reflection and landscapes. He has won several photography contests and awards, and has exhibited in solo shows in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia region, and has participated in exhibitions in Florida.
Artist’s Statement: “Photography has provided the opportunity to combine two of my lifelong interests – artistic composition and the challenges of an ever-evolving technology, in this case digital photography. While photography has many pedestiran uses for which objective, unedited presentations are a requirement, my interests reside in the art form where the limits are defined by the creativity of the artist. My goals are those that can be found in all expressions of art – a personal message that provokes thought, reflection and an emotional response for the viewer. Hopefully I have achieved some element of success in this mission with the images selected for this website.”
Dr. Philip Schein’s interest in photography began in earnest when his young family was growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, working largely in B&W while preparing prints
in his basement darkroom. After a hiatus of several years his interest in photography was renewed when digital photography advanced in technology so that images began to approximate the quality of film. He has studied with Bruce Barnbaum and Jack Dykinga. His compositional interests include abstraction, reflections and landscapes. He has won several photography contests, including those sponsored by Internal Medicine News, SmithKline & French Labs and the National Enquirer, has taken several blue ribbons in the annual Merion Cricket Club shows, and has sold rights to pictures to publications such as Stern magazine in Germany. During November 2015 he participated in a two person show of his works and has a scheduled exhibition at the Cosmopolitan Club of Philadelphia opening October 27, 2017.
Dr. Schein is a medical oncologist and pharmacologist. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, the organization that manages the National Laboratory on the International Space Station. Dr. Schein has held major positions in the field of cancer research including the presidency of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a White House appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board.
Artist’s Statement
“Photography has provided the opportunity to combine two of my life long interests – artistic expression and the challenge of applying a rapidly evolving technology, in this case digital photography. While photography has many pedestrian uses in our society, for which objective, unedited presentation is a requirement, my interests reside in the art form where the limits are only the creativity of the artist. And there are feelings and emotions evoked throughout what might superficially appear to be a simple mechanical process: the recognition of a compelling image (the art of seeing), the release of the shutter to capture the “decisive moment” and the subsequent rendering of a vision on a computer screen. The goals are those that can be found in all other expressions of art – a personal artistic message that provokes thought, reflection and the reliving of the emotional experience in others. Hopefully I will achieve some element of success in this mission with the images selected for this website.”
